Palestinian civil society hosts a large number of non-governmental organizations that played a pivotal role in filling the vacuum left by state absence during the occupation years. However, these organizations today face a serious existential challenge: the question of financial and institutional sustainability.
Heavy dependence on foreign funding has rendered many of these organizations captive to donors' agendas and shifting priorities, weakening their capacity to set their own strategies and plan for the long term. Moreover, any reduction in international financing — for geopolitical or economic reasons — threatens the collapse of an entire sector that has built valuable expertise and institutions over years.
The path toward sustainability requires: diversifying funding sources to include local financing, membership dues, and service revenues; building solid membership bases that grant the organization genuine social legitimacy; and developing hybrid organizational models that combine developmental goals with institutional efficiency. Palestinian civil society organizations are called to think with the mindset of the social entrepreneur — seeking sustainable social impact rather than remaining hostage to external funding cycles.
