PNGO · 2017
The Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO), with Norwegian People’s Aid, held its 2017 annual conference in Gaza City under the title “National Reconciliation from the Civil Society Perspective”, calling for obstacles to reconciliation to be removed, for the Palestinian Authority’s punitive measures on Gaza to end and for an urgent recovery plan involving civil society. Speaking on economic recovery, Omar Shaban examined the economic challenges and opportunities facing the National Reconciliation Government and urged intensive job creation in housing, infrastructure, agriculture and fisheries, continued reconstruction, closer ties with Egypt, the use of some $8 billion in bank deposits and mortgage programmes to ease the housing crisis. He also called for a review of monopolistic contracts in telecommunications, electricity and energy, including the Gaza Marine gas agreement with British Gas, and for the diaspora to invest through guaranteed funds so as to make reconciliation “irreversible”.
