PalThink for Strategic Studies concluded the second training course titled "Advocacy and Social Media," which comes within the project "Promoting Democratic and Civic Values among Youth," funded by the Government of Canada, with the participation of 25 male and female university students from various geographic areas across the Gaza Strip.

The course was opened by Mr. Omar Shaban, Director of PalThink for Strategic Studies, welcoming the participating youth, before stressing the need to focus on the role of young people and the extent of their impact on society through pressure and the use of "social media" to convey their issues and problems to the world.

The course, delivered over three days by trainer Ali Bakheet, President of the Social Media Club–Palestine, and trainer Mahmoud Al-Taweel, a member of the Social Media Club, included an introduction to the history of media from ancient times to the advent of social media.

The concept of social media, its features, its social characteristics, and the ethics and controls governing the use of social networking sites were reviewed.

Trainer Mahmoud Al-Taweel said that social media platforms currently constitute the main pillar for youth, explaining that this strengthens their role by using them to develop themselves and deliver good content that reflects the culture of Palestinian society regionally and internationally.

He pointed out that social networking sites have enabled everyone to get to know the world, noting that this enhances our role in how to communicate effectively with the outside world.

Participants also learned how to use social networking sites, their importance, and how to avoid common mistakes in using websites, in addition to international advocacy through social media aimed at how Palestinians can deal with and address the Western media.

The participants praised the importance of this course, which contributed to raising their level of awareness and knowledge in the field of social media, the Cybercrime Law, and mechanisms for communicating with the outside world and the Western media.

The course concluded with Mr. Omar Shaban emphasizing the need to strengthen the role of youth through social networking sites and to address their issues and concerns on social media platforms, whose impact has become clear in changing reality through pressure and advocacy campaigns in service of society and the Palestinian cause.

This project is funded by the Government of Canada and runs for six months. It includes ten educational lectures and three radio episodes on issues of democracy and political development in Palestinian society, in addition to three training courses on topics related to combating corruption and strengthening the tools of social accountability and transparency in Palestinian society.
