This exemplifies the politicization of aid whereby donor countries weaponize humanitarian and development assistance to constrain recipient nations' sovereign decision-making.
The true financial relationship between the wealthy Global North and the poor Global South is far more complex than the aid narrative suggests. While Northern countries provide development assistance to Southern nations, actual financial flows — accounting for profit repatriation, debt servicing, tax avoidance, and unequal trade terms — run overwhelmingly from South to North. Multinational corporations transfer profits to Northern tax havens; sovereign debt drains public budgets to service Northern bank interest.
