How Global Economic and Political Conditions Bear on Rebuilding Gaza

Radio Al-Shams · 2025-10-07

Dr. Omar Shaban believes a ceasefire in Gaza remains distant because there is no political decision to end the war, amid procedural and political complications and no real guarantees regarding future governance in Gaza and disarmament. He says global economic conditions and worsening financial crises in Europe and the United States are hindering aid and reconstruction, while Arab funding is conditional and international support depends on clear political and economic interests, requiring Palestinians to adopt a realistic strategy and build genuine partnerships.

Economic expert Dr. Omar Shaban believes that a ceasefire in Gaza remains far off due to the absence of a political decision to end the war.

He added in a phone interview with the program “First News” on Al-Shams Radio that procedural and political complications are preventing radical steps from being taken so far, especially in light of the ongoing tension and the absence of real guarantees regarding the future of governance in Gaza and disarmament.

He pointed out that global economic conditions are playing a major role in the obstruction of aid, as Europe and America are facing escalating fiscal and financial crises as a result of wars and other economic challenges, which limits their ability to support the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip with the huge sums demanded by the Palestinians.

## Arab funding is conditional

He added that Arab funding is conditional and subject to the interests of regimes, making support neither guaranteed nor continuous.

He said that Palestine needs to rethink its political and economic alliances, stressing the need to seek real strategic partnerships instead of relying only on emotional or popular support.

He noted that a number of geopolitically important countries such as Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey, and some countries allocate large amounts of money to invest in those countries away from Gaza.

## International aid is not charity

Shaban stressed that aid and international funding are not charity or zakat, but rather depend on clear economic interests. Therefore, it is necessary for Palestine to determine what offers and value it can provide to encourage investors and supporters to participate in reconstruction.

He pointed out that there is growing awareness that international support is not guaranteed without a political decision and a clear strategy, calling on Palestinians to think realistically and abandon traditional political dreams that may halt opportunities for development and international support.
