Economist Dr. Omar Shaban said that one of the reasons for Israeli societal support for the war on the Gaza Strip is that it has an image of Palestinian society as extremist and supportive of what is taking place.
Shaban added, in an intervention on the program "Awwal Khabar" on Al-Shams Radio, that the people of Gaza have been waking up and going to sleep to massacres for 10 months, and that they feel despair after all attempts have failed and the war and its devastating repercussions continue.
He pointed out that the latest bombardment by the Israeli army on the Gaza Strip, which claimed the lives of 100 people, was based on unproven allegations of the presence of military personnel in the area, and that the war has killed more than 40,000 civilians, including women and children, while those remaining among Gaza’s residents are "on the lists of death."
Shaban added that "neither American pressure, nor disagreements within the war coalition, nor demonstrations in support of Palestine, nor European positions, nor the United Nations and the Arab League have been able to affect the pace of the war by even an iota. On the contrary, the bombing machine continues, and the simple people and children are paying the price."
He stressed that those remaining among the people of Gaza are saying enough to all parties, and that this is not surrender but rather a conviction in the failure of all efforts, and that the Palestinian people waited many months for the international community to intervene and it failed, adding, "I am not sure there is an international intention and capacity to influence the Israeli War Cabinet."
Shaban explained that he is betting on the American administration and the elections, whose pace has begun to intensify, to have an impact, noting that the Egyptian-Qatari-American trilateral statement is different from what came before, but that the will for war in the Israeli government is still strong and is growing stronger every day.
He continued, saying: "When people go out every day by the thousands in the streets of the Gaza Strip raising the white flag and slogans demanding an end to the war, their going out in this way confirms that they are not with the war," stressing that official efforts alone are not enough.
Shaban considered that what is happening is a one-sided war, after it had initially been reciprocal clashes, noting that war alone cannot accomplish all tasks, that there is no war that has ended all disputes, and that a space must be left for politics to achieve what the war did not end.
