The Democratic Engineering Gathering in Gaza’s Central Governorate held a workshop in April 2010 titled “Unemployment and engineers: where to?”, with UNDP representative Iman al-Husseini, UNRWA’s Maher Safi and economist Omar Shaban. Organisers warned that unemployment among engineers was worsening under the siege, the division and repeated Israeli incursions. Shaban stressed that professional unions such as the Engineers Association should play a prominent and effective role in drawing up plans and policies and in distributing funds under the reconstruction plan, in partnership with the Arab and international institutions involved; participants agreed to form independent pressure committees for the engineering sector.
