PalThink for Strategic Studies, in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation of Germany, organized on Tuesday morning a seminar titled “The Role of Government Institutions in Encouraging Investment in Renewable Energy” in Gaza City.

Omar Shaban, Director of PalThink, welcomed the attendees, stressing the importance of holding such seminars that serve the national interest.

For his part, Eng. Awni Naeem, Director General of the Energy and Electricity Authority, said that his authority’s strategic plan consists of rationalizing consumption, moving toward benefiting from alternative energy, and also establishing laws, regulations, and national standards that organize work in the field of renewable energy.

Naeem spoke about the difficulties facing his authority in replacing conventional energy with alternative energy, going on to discuss the electricity deficit and the consequences resulting from the blockade imposed on Gaza.

He explained that there are examples of the use of renewable energy in both the intensive care unit at Al-Nasr Children’s Hospital in Gaza and Al-Agha School in Khan Younis, in addition to many proposed projects that will be implemented soon.

For his part, Eng. Sobhi Skeik, Director General of the General Administration for Engineering, Regulation, and Planning at the Ministry of Local Government, recommended the need to apply building regulations requiring solar-powered water-heating systems, and to prohibit the construction of rooftop structures on buildings exceeding five floors in order to use the building’s roof to generate solar energy for its residents.

Meanwhile, Eng. Hatem Al-Nabris, Director General of the Electromechanical Unit at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, stressed the need to move toward energy-efficient buildings, to work with energy-saving electrical appliances, and to avoid using energy-consuming ones.

Al-Nabris called for the installation of smart electricity meters as one of the conditions for providing electricity and making use of larger quantities of it.
