PalThink for Strategic Studies in Gaza City launched a training program titled "Skills of Expression and Intellectual Writing," which extends over "10" training days during the period from 15–26 September 2019. This training comes as part of the activities of the project "Enhancing Political Participation among Palestinian Youth," which aims to empower young people to develop and refine the skills of expression, speaking, and intellectual writing, and to strengthen and activate youth community participation in Palestine. The project is funded by the Government of Canada, with the participation of 20 young men and women who were selected according to their competence and ability in effective writing, and distributed to cover all areas of the Gaza Strip geographically and demographically.

The training program was opened by Mr Omar Shaban, Director of PalThink for Strategic Studies, praising the leading role of youth in the development and advancement of Palestinian society, which needs their energies, and affirming the institution’s active role in developing and serving the youth cadre in a manner that serves the public interest and community building. He added that it is necessary for youth to possess sufficient awareness of the policies and regional events affecting the Palestinian issue in order to deal quickly and effectively with the various changes on the international scene. He pointed to the role of purposeful training in building representatives of the Palestinian people capable of conveying the beautiful image of Palestine through all diplomatic, media, and legal channels of communication.

He also stressed the role of the word and its power in conveying the message of the Palestinians and consolidating their presence in international forums and media circles, citing examples from peaceful struggles around the world whose experiences can be drawn upon in support of the Palestinian cause, the achievement of national reconciliation, and the resolution of disputes leading to internal division.

He also welcomed trainer Muhammad al-Natour, a consultant and legal activist specializing in training in the fields of community and legal intervention and life skills. Mr. Muhammad affirmed the depth of PalThink’s influence in building young Palestinian leaders and its concern for the active element inherent in youth energies. He urged the training participants to intensify their efforts, speaking about the important roles that the course graduates will assume in issuing papers addressing the key issues facing the Palestinian people in general, and citizens in the Gaza Strip in particular.

The first day of the training addressed a set of interactive activities carried out by the trainer to reinforce communication concepts and skills among the participants and invest them in refining a solid personality that enables them to speak with confidence and strength before an audience.

The participants also worked in separate groups to discuss and present multiple aspects of effective communication skills and the characteristics of a successful communication process, in addition to the obstacles to the communication process and ways of dealing with them.

The meeting also addressed some important topics such as the important role of women and their participation in the political process and their distinguished ability in communication and interaction, in addition to the ethical and professional considerations of journalistic, legal, and humanitarian communication when meeting different segments of Palestinian and international society.

The meeting concluded with a review of the important points discussed during the day and the exchange of feedback between the trainer and the participants. The participants expressed their enthusiasm for other topics to be covered by the highly competent trainers in the remainder of the ten-day training program, including: body language skills, presentation skills, leadership skills, workshops on successful writing, effective narration, content writing, and others. The training will conclude with the review and presentation of the participants’ writings by a specialized committee to crown the participants’ efforts and unleash their energies in reformist and positive directions that benefit society as a whole.
