In a Facebook post reported by Shams News, economist Omar Shaban says the Gaza power plant receives about $2 million a month for burning fuel regardless of how much electricity it generates, that its owners have recovered their investment several times over and earn around $10 million a year, and that a kilowatt-hour from the plant costs roughly three times one bought from Israel. He calls the contract, signed in 2000 without passing through the Legislative Council and due to end in 2020, “a bad contract with no equal in the world”, says ending it would save $2 million a month and cut electricity bills by 30%, and accuses monopolies with corrupt contracts of draining Palestinian society.
