PalThink for Strategic Studies held an evaluation session within the project “Encouraging Young Entrepreneurs in Gaza to Create an Entrepreneurial Society,” implemented by PalThink for Strategic Studies and funded by the Middle East Partnership Initiative. The meeting was attended by a group of young men and women, the entrepreneurs participating in the project who have ideas for small businesses. The participants received a comprehensive training course entitled “How to Start Your Own Business.” The course addressed several topics related to management, production, marketing, and finance, under the supervision of a team of trainers and mentors from the private sector who were highly qualified in the aforementioned subjects. The training continued, both theoretically and practically, from January 2016 until July 2016.

The meeting was opened by Mr. Omar Shaaban, Director of PalThink for Strategic Studies, who welcomed those present and thanked them for their commitment throughout the project period. He also praised their constant eagerness to refine their talents and develop their skills in various fields. The meeting aimed to follow up on and evaluate the work and to review what had been achieved in the project in terms of training and guidance for the participants and the development of their business plans by the mentoring team, with the goal of enabling them to establish sustainable economic projects that would contribute to improving their living conditions. It also aimed to discuss the obstacles the participants faced during their field training, in addition to their recommendations and proposals, and to take them into consideration in other projects.

The young participants began by presenting the achievements and activities they had accomplished, and their views were unanimous regarding the high value of the training within the project. They all affirmed that they had possessed only ideas for projects in their minds, but now they had fully developed ideas with business plans ready for implementation, supervised by specialists in each field. The young participants also confirmed that their knowledge had increased regarding new ideas, market rules, and the promotion of goods and services, which would have a major impact on making the necessary development to their future project plans. All participants also agreed that they were ready to begin implementing their projects after their motivation to work had increased, especially since, after the lengthy training within the project “Encouraging Young Entrepreneurs in Gaza to Create an Entrepreneurial Society,” they had managed to reach the lowest costs and the lowest rate of loss in their plans, which encouraged them to work vigorously to realize their entrepreneurial ideas. Some of these young people had already begun implementation. One participant, Marwan Atallah, 22, from Al-Maghazi Camp, stated: “I have already begun implementing and selling my wooden products, and I was able to market 100 pieces during the Eid al-Fitr period after learning the process of marketing and management at the lowest costs within this project.”

The mentoring team also affirmed that they, too, had benefited from this project in strengthening the networking process between their institutions and among themselves as a team of mentors, who worked in an integrated manner to create capable and productive youth able to create job opportunities for themselves independently and also contribute to reducing the unemployment rate in their society.
